History & Origins of Chuseok
Chuseok (originally known as Hangawi) is a three-day major harvest festival in South Korea, celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. Historically, it traces back to the ancient Kingdom of Silla, arising as a major thanksgiving festival celebrating the completion of the autumn harvest and honoring the blessings of ancestors.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
Koreans travel to their ancestral hometowns. Families perform 'Charye' (ancestral memorial services at home), clean the graves of ancestors (Beolcho), dress in beautiful Hanbok, eat traditional 'Songpyeon' (half-moon shaped rice cakes steamed over pine needles), and join in the circle dance 'Ganggangsullae'.
