History & Origins of Hari Raya Haji
Hari Raya Haji (known globally as Eid al-Adha) in Malaysia and Singapore is a sacred Islamic festival commemorating the absolute devotion of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to Allah, demonstrated by his willingness to sacrifice his son Ishmael. Historically, it also marks the successful conclusion of the annual Hajj pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
Muslims begin the day with congregational prayers at mosques, followed by the ritual sacrifice (korban) of sheep or cattle. The meat is distributed to the needy, family members, and neighbors, followed by visiting relatives for festive meals.
