History & Origins of Freedom Day
Freedom Day (Dia da Liberdade) in Portugal, celebrated on April 25th, commemorates the historic Carnation Revolution of 1974. Led by captain-level military officers in a bloodless coup, the movement successfully overthrew the authoritarian Estado Novo regime (established by Salazar), restored democratic liberties, and ended Portugal's colonial wars.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
It is celebrated with massive street rallies where citizens carry red carnations (which were placed in the barrels of soldiers' rifles during the revolution), political speeches, civic marathons, and evening concerts.
