The Battle of Angamos, observed on October 8th, is a pivotal national holiday in Peru. It commemorates the naval battle that took place on October 8, 1879, during the War of the Pacific. In this engagement, the Peruvian ironclad Huáscar was surrounded and captured by the Chilean Navy off Point Angamos. Peru's legendary Admiral Miguel Grau, known as the 'Knight of the Seas' for his chivalry toward defeated enemies, tragically lost his life during the combat, becoming the nation's supreme military hero.

At exactly 9:50 AM (the moment Grau passed away), the entire nation observes a minute of silence. Grand military and naval parades are held in Callao, and citizens lay wreaths at Grau's monuments across Peru, celebrating patriotism and naval honor.
