History & Origins of National Youth Day
National Youth Day, observed in South Africa on June 16th, commemorates the historic Soweto Uprising of June 16, 1976. On this day, thousands of black high school students launched a peaceful protest against the apartheid government's decree enforcing Afrikaans as the medium of instruction. Police opened fire, killing hundreds of youths, sparkign global outrage and accelerating the fall of apartheid.
