History & Origins of Children's Day

Children's Day (Kodomo no Hi) in Japan, celebrated on May 5th, marks the final day of Golden Week. Historically originating from the ancient festival 'Tango no Sekku' (Double Fifth), which celebrated boys and fatherhood, the modern holiday was established in 1948 to celebrate the personalities and happiness of all children and express gratitude to mothers.

How It Is Observed & Celebrated

Families fly spectacular carp-shaped windsocks (Koinobori) representing strength and perseverance outside their homes, display traditional samurai helmets (Kabuto) inside, take hot baths scented with iris leaves (Shōbuyu), and eat sweet rice cakes wrapped in oak leaves (Kashiwamochi).
