History & Origins of Waitangi Day
Waitangi Day, observed in New Zealand on February 6th, commemorates the historic signing of the Treaty of Waitangi (Te Tiriti o Waitangi) on February 6, 1840. The treaty was signed at the grounds of James Busby's house in Waitangi by representatives of the British Crown and over 40 Maori chiefs, establishing a British Governor while guaranteeing Maori land ownership and rights, serving as the founding document of modern New Zealand.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
Official ceremonies are held at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, featuring Maori waka (canoe) demonstrations, traditional powhiri welcomes, and political discussions in the meeting house. Nationwide, communities celebrate with multi-cultural music festivals and beach barbecues.
