History & Origins of King's Day
King's Day (Koningsdag) in the Netherlands, celebrated on April 27th, commemorates the birthday of the reigning monarch, King Willem-Alexander. Historically originating in 1885 as Princess's Day (and later Queen's Day), the holiday represents a day of national unity, Dutch pride, and royal celebration.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
The entire country turns into a sea of orange (Oranjegekte). Dutch citizens set up massive, nationwide flea markets (vrijmarkt) on city sidewalks, cruise through Amsterdam's canals on orange-decorated boats, and enjoy open-air live music festivals.
