Benito Juárez's Birthday (Natalicio de Benito Juárez) is celebrated in Mexico on the third Monday of March (around his actual birthdate of March 21, 1806). Juárez was a Zapotec Indian who rose from humble origins to become a highly influential President of Mexico. He successfully defended the country against French intervention, championed the 'Leyes de Reforma' (Reform Laws) that established a strict separation of church and state, and famously coined the national maxim: 'Among individuals, as among nations, respect for the rights of others is peace'.
