History & Origins of Shōwa Day

Shōwa Day (Shōwa no Hi) is a Japanese national holiday on April 29th. It honors the birthday of the late Emperor Hirohito (posthumously Emperor Shōwa), who ruled from 1926 to 1989. Historically, the holiday encourages the public to reflect on the turbulent and dramatic 63 years of the Shōwa era, which saw the devastation of WWII followed by Japan's spectacular post-war economic miracle and peaceful reconstruction.

How It Is Observed & Celebrated

It marks the start of Japan's famous Golden Week. Citizens visit parks, attend lectures on twentieth-century history, and travel to family hometowns.
