Mountain Day (Yama no Hi) in Japan, celebrated on August 11th, was formally legislated in 2016 following decades of lobbying by alpine clubs. As a highly mountainous nation deeply influenced by mountain-worship (Shugendo), the holiday encourages the public to connect with and appreciate the spiritual and environmental blessings of Japan's peaks.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
Citizens participate in organized mountain hikes, attend eco-tourism festivals in alpine resorts, and take summer holiday trips to Mount Fuji and the Japanese Alps.
