History & Origins of Autumnal Equinox Day
Autumnal Equinox Day (Shūbun no Hi) in Japan is a national holiday observed on the day of the autumn equinox. Historically established in 1948, it continues the ancient tradition of 'Higan', dedicating the day to paying respect to ancestors, remembering the deceased, and expressing gratitude for the completion of the summer crop harvest.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
Marked by family grave visits, attending special memorial services at local temples, and eating 'Ohagi' (rice cakes coated in sweet bean paste, named after the autumn bush clover) to welcome the change of seasons.
