History & Origins of Makar Sankranti
Makar Sankranti marks the transition of the Sun into the zodiac sign of Makara (Capricorn) on its path northward (Uttarayan). Unlike most Hindu festivals which follow the lunar calendar, Makar Sankranti follows the solar cycle, celebrating the end of winter and the arrival of longer harvest days.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
Marked by bathing in sacred rivers, offering prayers to the Sun God, flying colorful kites that fill the winter sky, and preparing traditional sweets made of sesame seeds and jaggery (til-gul), representing warmth, sweet relationships, and peace.
