History & Origins of Ochi Day
Ochi Day (Anniversary of the 'No') in Greece, celebrated on October 28th, commemorates Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas's historic rejection of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini's 1940 ultimatum. Mussolini demanded the occupation of strategic Greek sites; Metaxas defiantly replied with a single word: 'Ochi!' ('No!'), marking Greece's entry into World War II.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
Greece celebrates with massive student and military parades in Athens and Thessaloniki, flying the blue-and-white national flag from every balcony, and chanting patriotic songs celebrating Greek resistance (Ethniki Antistasi).
