History & Origins of Sacred Heart
The Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus commemorates the physical heart of Jesus Christ as the symbol of his divine love and compassion for humanity. Historically arising from the mystical visions of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque in the 17th century, the feast is celebrated on the Friday after the octave of Corpus Christi. In Colombia, it is a highly prominent public holiday, reflecting the historic 1902 official consecration of the Colombian nation to the Sacred Heart to bring peace during a civil war.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
Colombians celebrate with special family prayers, parish masses, and community feasts. Many households display pictures of the Sacred Heart decorated with fresh flowers on their balconies.
