History & Origins of Independence of Cartagena

The Independence of Cartagena, celebrated on November 11th, commemorates the historic day in 1811 when the Caribbean port city of Cartagena de Indias declared absolute independence from the Spanish Crown. It was the first city in present-day Colombia, and the second in South America, to establish a sovereign, fully independent republic, led by patriotic leaders and the working-class community of Getsemaní.
