The Battle of Boyacá, observed on August 7th, is a core national holiday in Colombia. It commemorates the decisive battle fought on August 7, 1819, near the Teatinos River in Boyacá. The Republican army led by Simón Bolívar and Francisco de Paula Santander defeated the Spanish Royalist forces, securing the permanent liberation of New Granada (modern-day Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Panama) from Spanish imperial rule.
