History & Origins of Our Lady of Mount Carmel
Our Lady of Mount Carmel (Virgen del Carmen) is celebrated on July 16th as the Patron Saint and Queen of Chile. Historically, the devotion was brought by Spanish Augustinians in the 17th century. During the Chilean War of Independence, legendary General Bernardo O'Higgins declared the Virgen del Carmen the patroness and protectress of the Chilean Army, praying for victory at the Battle of Maipú in 1818.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
Chileans celebrate with grand religious processions through city streets, where beautifully decorated statues of the Virgin are carried, accompanied by 'Huaso' cowboys on horseback, traditional dances, and parish feasts.
