History & Origins of Navy Day
Navy Day (Día de las Glorias Navales) in Chile, celebrated on May 21st, commemorates the historic Battle of Iquique during the War of the Pacific in 1879. It honors the legendary heroism of Captain Arturo Prat Chacón, who bravely boarded the Peruvian ironclad Huáscar from his wooden corvette Esmeralda and met his death, inspiring Chilean forces to eventual victory in the war.
