History & Origins of Battle of Arica
The Battle of Arica, celebrated on June 7th in Chile (particularly in the Arica region), commemorates the Battle of Arica fought on June 7, 1880, during the War of the Pacific. Chilean forces under Colonel Pedro Lagos successfully stormed the heavily fortified Cape Arica (El Morro) in a lightning-fast assault lasting just 55 minutes, securing the strategic northern territory for Chile.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
It is celebrated in Arica with grand military parades at the foot of El Morro hill, historic re-enactments of the assault, folk dancing, and a spectacular evening firework display on the clifftop.
