History & Origins of Saint George's Day
Saint George's Day, observed on April 23rd, commemorates the patron saint of England, Georgia, and Aragon. George was a Roman soldier of Christian faith who was executed under Emperor Diocletian in 303 CE. Historically, the legend of Saint George slaying the dragon arose in the crusader era, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. In Canada (specifically Newfoundland), it remains an official provincial holiday.
