History & Origins of National Aboriginal Day
National Aboriginal Day (now National Indigenous Peoples Day) is celebrated in the Northwest Territories and Yukon on June 21st, the summer solstice. Formally established in 1996, it honors the unique heritage, diverse cultures, and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples of Canada.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
Celebrated with traditional sunrise ceremonies, sacred fire burnings, drum dancing, hand games tournaments, and cultural workshops showcasing indigenous art and local foods.
