History & Origins of Natal Day
Natal Day is celebrated in Nova Scotia (primarily Halifax and Dartmouth) on the first Monday of August. Historically, it commemorates the founding of the city of Halifax on June 21, 1749 by British General Edward Cornwallis. The holiday was moved to August to take advantage of warm summer weather.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
Marked by a historic parade across the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge, outdoor concerts on the Halifax Waterfront, dragon boat races, and spectacular evening fireworks.
