Republic Proclamation Day (Proclamação da República) in Brazil, celebrated on November 15th, commemorates the historic events of 1889 in Rio de Janeiro. A military coup led by Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca overthrew the constitutional monarchy of Emperor Dom Pedro II, formally dissolving the Empire of Brazil and establishing the United States of Brazil as a federal republic.
